Angels Gate Estate Winery
Angels Gate Estate Winery is one of our favourites. The building and location are beautiful with views from their terrace overlooking Lake Ontario that are hard to beat. On a clear (or even semi-clear) day you can easily see the Toronto skyline. To make things even better, in the summer you can buy pizza from their wood-fired oven and have a wonderful meal on the terrace with cool lake breezes and the trellis for shade. Fantastic!
The staff is friendly and knowledgeable and the wines are very good and priced reasonably, from $13.95 to $39.95 (Canadian dollars, of course). In particular, we like the Cabernet Merlot. We bought several bottles in 2006 and ended up with one that got forgotten somehow until 2014. In all honesty, it’s rare for us to manage to keep a bottle that long and it was excellent! Angels Gate has vineyards primarily on the Beamsville Bench but also, if I’m not mistaken, source grapes from other parts of Niagara.
The tasting bar and showroom is large but sometimes can get crowded, especially in the summer. With that said, we’ve never really had to wait too long for tasting. We like to take a few minutes to look (and walk) around before we taste anyway.
The parking is large but not paved and there is something of a walk from the parking lot up to the winery between the pond and the gardens along the pond outlet with gorgeous views to occupy your time. Just be aware that there is a walk if the weather is not cooperating.
We highly recommend visiting Angels Gate!
